"Aint nothin Affirmative about your action, til the people get PAID!" - Prince
Ok...so for one reason or another it seems like the thing that has been on everyone's lips is... AFFIRMATIVE ACTION.
Not really sure why. Maybe it has something to do with the new open supreme court seat or maybe it's just the normal college rush. either way, it has been whirling around my ears.
So here is my peice. lol
With this process in place, how can one ever really be sure that the people being excepted into colleges are top material? how can a person be sure that they were excepted based upon their merit and not their race? They cant. Affirmative action is both positive and negative. Without it, many schools (mainly ivy leagues) would have little to no intergration. People of color deserve the same educational oppurtunities as others, regardless of race, social status, or financial standing (due to social status). And although we would like to all think , if someone does the work, then they will get the top position that they deserve, we also know that this is not the way the world works. There are still some people who would rather pick the brilliant white boy over the brilliant black boy.
But the question that arises is, "what do you do if a student of color and a white student have the same qualifications and are equal in every aspect?" Well, they both should get in. But the truth is, there is not always enough room for both. How do you decide which one gets cut, without it becoming an issue of race? You cant. Either way someone is going to play the race card. There are more likely to be other white students with the same qualifications. But the chances of there being just as many ethnic students is slimmer. So, do you let in the student of color for a more diverse demographic? The line really is blurry.
I agree, to an extent that Affirmative Action is a joke. It lets people in who do NOT deserve it. It lets in the "hoodrats", "ghetto superstars", and "nigras" that the rest of us have tried so hard to escape. I did not work this hard, to be brought down by the ignorance of others in my race. I do not want the value of my intelligence to be lowered because it is just valuable in comparrison to them.
At the same time, some sort of law like Affirmative Action needs to be in place. Without it, many people would not get the chance for higher education. (Even if they are deserving).
So what is the alternative? do we make the schools have a certain percentage of each race? do we do a blind study/application process? Maybe you shouldnt have to check that little box, saying which race you are. Besides who wants to be defined by a bow? I know I surely dont! (hell I check all that apply. You cant define a mixed kid) Maybe you should just fill out an application with your academic information on it and be judged and selected blindly? But then there is the issue of names. Often times names can give one away. Names such as. Rosalinda Gonzalez, or Abdul Sveyenni, or Sheniquanda Jones. So...how could that be avoided? Could you leave that off? Could you just be identified by numbers? When you try to avoid racial discrimination you just invent more problems...so the easiest solution would be...
simply to appreciate people for who they are...and NOT for how they look.
